Located about 62 miles northeast of Barcelona, Gerona is among the major cities in Catalan. There are many major tourist attractions here as well as nearby Barcelona, so its airport also remains busy welcoming guests and locals coming in and out of the city throughout the year.

From the time that the airport was built up to 1997, around 500,000 passengers were welcomed by the staff at the airport. However, Gerona Airport grew to become an ultra-busy air transportation hub when airline carrier RyanAir chose it to be one of their main hubs in Europe. From a mere 557,000 passengers in 2002, the number of people coming in and out of the airport grew to astronomical proportions during the following years:

  • 2004 – 2.9 million
  • 2005 – 3.5 million
  • 2006 – 3.6 million
  • 2007 – 4.8 million
  • 2008 – 5.5 million
  • 2009 – 5.3 million
  • 2010 – 4.8 million
  • 2011 – 3 million

To accommodate such a growth in the number of passengers, the airport facilities were soon improved. On the ground floor of the airport, there are 33 check-in desks and 11 boarding gates which are used for both domestic and international flights. There are also counters for car hire companies to make it easy for passengers to book private transportation from the airport to their respective hotels. There are also food galleries in the departures area, as well as a few shops.

If you are having the ultimate European tour and Spain is one of your stops, you should definitely consider using the Gerona Airport as an alternative to Barcelona. From Gerona, you can go to Barcelona’s tourist attractions via bus, taxi or train from the railway station at the city. There are also car hire companies which offer transfers from Gerona to Barcelona, and the drive is a mere 60 minutes.

Aside from Barcelona, the Gerona Airport is also close to the resorts along Costa Brava. The French border is only 40 minutes away and visitors use the airport as a gateway to explore the ski resorts in Andorra. Finally, those who would like to explore the rest of the city via rented cars can use the three main roads: E-15, C-25 and the N-II highways.
